New ASTM International Sports Equipment Standard Covers Wrestling Mats

A new ASTM International standard will be used to alert and remind users of important hazards and handling issues related to wrestling mats. ASTM F2983, Guide for Manufacturers for Labeling and Care Instructions for Wrestling Mats, was developed by Subcommittee F08.12 on Gymnastics and Wrestling Equipment, part of ASTM International Committee F08 on Sports Equipment, Playing Surfaces and Facilities.

“ASTM F2983 will provide manufacturers with recommended guidelines to follow,” says Paul Gilbert, president, Resilite Sports Products Inc., and F08.12 chairman. “Proper labeling and handling will result in longer life for the product and safer use by the athlete.”
Manufacturers and purchasers of mats will be the primary users of the new standard. The subcommittee hopes that the National Collegiate Athletic Association and National High School Federation will adopt the standard into their regulations.
ASTM F2983 provides a list of required information to be placed on labels that are durably affixed to wrestling mats. This includes identification and contact information for the manufacturer and instructions stating that the mat is only to be used under the supervision of trained and qualified instructors.
In addition, the standard provides requirements for additional product literature that can be placed directly on the packaging for a mat or as printed instructions included with it. Accompanying literature should include:

Care instructions;
Warranty or note on where warranty can by accessed;
Manufacturer information;
Statement to read and comply with manufacturer’s instructions; and
Statement to comply with rules of applicable sports.
Gilbert invites all interested parties to participate in its activities, including development of a proposed new standard, ASTM WK31342, Specification for Outdoor Wall Padding.
